Bluewater Productions makes celebrities and famous figures the new superheroes of the world of comics. The most recent issue? Conan O'Brien.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)--move on Green Lantern. The theme of the next Bluewater Productions comic book is high, hair of flame and a heck of lot more fun.

Night host Conan O'Brien is the latest in a series of celebrities and figures famous to be immortalized in ink by the small press based in Vancouver, Washington, that makes headlines and revenues with their biography of comic books. O'Brien's comic strip is set to debut in August.

The company generates some comic books four per month, most of them not authorized by the subject, according to the company President Darren Davis. General David Petraeus will get his own comic book this November.

Generate buzz

Davis comes from Los Angeles and worked for a time in the industry of entertainment, companies such as E! Entertainment Television and USA Networks. So he knows the power of celebrity and has an ability to generate publicity for product lines, comic books and graphic novels, which normally do not generate headlines in the mainstream media.

No advertising budget, bio of Bluewater comics have appeared in "Access Hollywood," "the today show" and Fox News. They have also been in "the huffington post," "USA today" and vanity fair, among others. And Davis press releases regularly picks up in the blogosphere.

Line of Bluewater fiction isn't loaded with big names like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Mark Zuckerberg, Princess Diana, Howard Stern, Madonna and Stephen King.

The line also has some issues unlikely, including Ayn Rand and the Barbie creator Ruth Handler. "These are simply people who want to know more about a bit," said Davis, adding that comic books bio working to provide a nonbiased look, academic and entertainment to public figures.

[Darren] hits pop biographies, and I think he has an ability to choose the right stories to tell, "said John Shableski, a consultant of market graphic novel."

"The enlightenment and the production is not the highest quality, but conforming to the expectations of readers who are fans of Justin Bieber, Stephenie Meyer or Lady Gaga death." You want to read about their idols. And Bluewater covers the need. What provides Bluewater is an approach of tiger beat for the world publishing novel graphic, or People magazine ", said Shableski.?

The comic book industry is dominated by some pretty big guns, as Marvel, the company behind X-Men and Spider-Man and DC Comics, Batman and Superman's home. This means that independent editors should be distinguished and "think that immediately" in order to obtain a segment of the market, said Davis.

Although most of the comics are primarily sold through specialty shops, Bluewater publications are in places that virtually ignored comics, such as libraries and bookstores, says Tom McLean, editor for animation magazine online. These places have been an area of great growth for comics, lately, he said.

Last year, Davis said that "more" Bluewater won 2 million dollars in revenues, a 25 per cent in 2009. And in February, the company got a Wal-Mart exclusive distribution agreement his bio comic "Fame: Justin Bieber", sold exclusively in places of United States of the giant retailer's. "Wal-Mart was a major game changer for us," said Davis, adding that up to 75 percent of sales now come from biography comics.

Girls superhero kicks butt. No!

Davis, along with his partner Jason Schultz, had founded Bluewater Productions in 2006, after the publication originally his work through other companies. Bluewater is a full-service production and publication specialized in multimedia and graphic novels, comic books. The company employs six people and uses more than one hundred of freelancers around the world.

In 2009, Davis was seeking to expand on themes of female emancipation in his fiction titles and decided to deal with the biography of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin comic book.

"Don't do that the traditional superhero girls kick ass because", said. "We have a strong female readership number with our superhero books."

The books of non fiction took off. Considering that Bluewater sold 4,000 copies per issue in one of his comics in popular fiction, such as "tenth Muse", comic book biography broke the 12,000 mark. Davis said that "doubled more than what we did,". Biography of Michelle Obama comic book, also published in 2009, sold over 100,000 copies, he said.

In July, the company presents its most recent addition, a comic book biography of Charlie Sheen, as part of the new line of "infamous". Bluewater will publish its second installment of Lindsay Lohan in September.

"Disagree on things juicy", said Davis. "I am not really interested, but I thought, okay, we will only start this"Infamous"line, that people have come to me and asked why I do not Mel Gibson or Schwarzenegger or Miley Cyrus. Do not want to do a lot of them, because I think they are kind of tacky. "

In other words, said Davis, for now Anthony Weiner is safe.To top of page
